Dr. Achamyelesh Debela

Coordinator, East Africa Regional Collaborating Centre, Africa CDC

Dr. Achamyelesh Kifle Debela is a Medical Doctor with a postgraduate in Pediatrics and Child Health from Addis Ababa University, Medical Faculty. She also has a Masters of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, MD, USA with an outstanding medical students’ award. She is a former Colonel Doctor of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF).

 

 

Currently, she is a coordinator for Africa CDC, the Eastern Africa Regional Collaborating Centre (RCC). Dr Achamyelesh is responsible for the implementation of Africa CDC’s strategic objectives in the Eastern Africa region that aims at building the capacity of the Member States in the early detection and preparedness as well as response to diseases and other Public Health concerns including natural and humanitarian disasters through integration and partnership with stakeholders in the region.

 

 

Prior to joining Africa CDC, Dr Achamyelesh served at the Africa Union, Peace and Security Commission as a medical planner to field missions including African Union Mission in Somalia, AMISOM and AU Regional Cooperation Initiatives in the East, Central and west Africa.

 

 

She has also served as a Chief Medical Officer in Central African Republic in the African led international peace support operation (MISCA) and also in the United Nations, African Union Hybrid Mission in west Darfur, Sudan(UNAMID). She has also served in the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) in different capacities as a Hospital Director, Dean of Defense Health Science college and as well as a clinician and faculty member.

 

 

Dr Achamyelesh has publications in children and public health. She is the co – author of the book, Public health aspects of HIV/AIDS in the middle and low income countries. She has played a major role in the preparation of National strategic planning in the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases in the Ministry of Health, Ethiopia.

 

 

She has served, in the Ethiopian first lady initiative, as an executive committee member of the National women coalition against HIV AIDS that among others advocated for women health in the public, the community and the political leadership.

 

 

Dr. Achamyelesh has an extensive experience of working with African Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and Regional Mechanisms (RMs).
