Biography

Ramesh is a specialist physician who is currently involved in a group practice in Durban. In 1968, he qualified as a medical practitioner with an M.B.B.Ch B.A.O degree from Dublin’s University of Ireland. He then went on to earn his higher medical degrees in England, namely an M.R.C.P. London (1974) and an honorary fellowship to the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom, F.R.C.P. F.C.P (Honorary), which he was awarded in 1996.

Since 1976, Ramesh has been actively involved in the public healthcare sector via his long- standing affiliation to the Nelson Mandela Medical School in KwaZulu-Natal. Initially, Ramesh provided gastro-enterology consulting services to the University and remains a part-time gastro-enterology senior lecturer and examiner for under-graduate medical students. He also provided managerial and administrative services to the Joint Medical Holdings Group and his Group Specialist Practice.

Ramesh became involved in the private hospital industry in 1983 when he realised the massive demand and need for beds in private hospitals for disadvantaged patients. Raising finance for such ventures proved difficult and so in 1983, City Hospital – then a 16-bed doctor-owned clinic – was constructed. City Hospital has grown substantially and is today a 374-bed private facility with world-class features and services.

Ramesh was the Chairman of City Hospital, since its inception, in 1983 until the merger with Isipingo Hospital when JMH was born in 1998. He served as Chairman of JMH from 1998 to 2017. He is currently the Chairman of JMH-Doctors SPV (RF) (Pty) Ltd and the Vice Chairman of Joint Medical Holdings (Pty) Ltd. He holds a number of additional prior/current directorships in Chatsmed Garden Hospital (sold to Afrox Healthcare); La Verna Hospital in Ladysmith and Victoria Hospital, south of Durban. He successfully co-ordinated 10 private hospitals into the ‘Inter Hospital Group’ and is the Chairman of Inter Hospital Pharmaceuticals.

He is a member of the South African Gastroenterology Society and the Society of Diabetes and Endocrinology. Ramesh has published 17 papers in both local and international journals. He has participated in numerous clinical trials and has presented a number of abstracts.
