Dr. Michael J. Katende MPHM, ADHSM, MD is a Public Health Specialist, with extensive experience in HIV and AIDS research, policy and practice, and Acting Head of Health Department at East African Community (EAC) Secretariat, in Arusha Tanzania. EAC is the regional intergovernmental body that brings together the republics of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Under his leadership the EAC region has developed a Health Sector Investment Priorities Framework for 2018-2028. In addition, the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) established the Kakira Regional Centre of Excellence on HIV & AIDS research in Jinja district, Uganda. Michael has contributed to regional and national policies on HIV and AIDS, and is currently spearheading efforts to develop a strategy that will guide the region towards achieving Universal Health and HIV Coverage (UHHC).
He is an advocate for adoption and implementation of sustainable financing mechanisms for the health sector, including national health insurance schemes as a means to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals of attaining Universal Health and HIV Coverage and that of “Leaving No East African Behind.”
