Redefining Healthcare Access

Reader,

On being appointed as the Director General of World Health Organization in July 2017, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, stated the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across the world is the top global health priority. Target 3.8 of the Sustainable Development Goals now focusses on achieving UHC, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health care services, medicines and vaccines for all. He also pointed out, “UHC is more a political than an economic challenge”, highlighting the need for further commitment from national governments to increase their spending, with an emphasis on national governments to increase healthcare budgets allowing for access to primary healthcare.

UHC covers a wide range of key services, accessible to the entire spectrum of the population. So what exactly IS UHC? How is it different from health insurance? What are the benefits of implementing UHC? And more importantly, what risks will we avoid by implementing UHC? How can we work together to ensure that we do it right?
