AHBS III Key Achievements

Dear Reader,

The AHB team was in Johannesburg, South Africa earlier this month and hosted over 350 delegates from 52 countries with 31 from African countries represented. AHBS III was 2 days of energetic dialogues, that demonstrated the will of stakeholders to collaborate and commit to a healthier Africa. The outcomes shared with several Ministries of Health will provide the much needed innovative approaches towards UHC for Africa.

We were delighted to host 4 Ministers of Health - Hon. Aaron Motsoaledi (South Arica), Hon. Wilhelmina Jallah (Liberia), Hon. Bernard Haufiku, (Namibia), Hon. Silvia Lutucuta (Angola) amongst other key dignitaries including H.E. Amira Elfadil, Commissioner of Social Services, African Union, Dr. Toda Takao (JICA) and Iqbal Surve (Sekunjalo Group)
The symposium kicked off with a welcome address from Dr. Amit N. Thakker, Chair of Africa Health Business, provided the synopsis of the 14 year journey travelled so far in creating a solid singular private healthcare entity for Africa to engage the Governments on a regular basis to create a win-win enterprise environment. The event created the perfect opportunity to set the framework for rolling out the Healthcare Federation of South Africa on the sidelines of the Symposium.

H.E. Amira Elfadil, Commissioner of Social Affairs, African Union, put the theme of the Symposium into perspective by reminding the delegates that the Africa Health Strategy envisions health coverage for all of Africa by 2030.

“The Africa We Want" is within our reach and we as Africans need only to strengthen our partnerships and turn our health aspirations into a reality.
Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister of Health, South Arica, who officially opened the symposium reminded delegates that UHC should leave no one behind and that there should be a focus on quality healthcare.

‘The day I will celebrate will be the day that African heads of state can seek healthcare in their own countries.’

At the close, we celebrated three key successes borne out of the Symposium:
  • Meaningful interaction and engagement with dignitaries
  • Tangible progress on unification of the private sector in South Africa under the Healthcare Federation of South Africa with good will from the Department of Health.
  • A commitment from the private health sector to support the African Union in achieving Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want
At AHBS III, it was evident there is a spirit of togetherness amongst the African countries and to have a significant impact in healthcare, we must work together.
